Brexit, the United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union following the 2016 referendum, sparked significant public and political division. In response to growing concerns over the process and potential consequences of Brexit, two major anti-Brexit marches took place in London on 23rd March 2019 and 19th October 2019. Both were organised by the People’s Vote campaign, which called for a second referendum on the final Brexit deal.
The 23rd March demonstration saw an estimated one million people take to the streets, making it one of the largest public demonstrations in British history. The 19th October protest, held just ahead of a key parliamentary vote on Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal, reportedly attracted a similar turnout, with hundreds of thousands of demonstrators demanding a final say on the deal. These mass mobilisations reflected widespread public unease and a deeply divided national sentiment over Brexit.
